Resumen: Social networks are increasingly used in universities because they have great potential to support the teaching-learning process, while reducing student frustration, isolation and loneliness. The objective of this research is to carry out a systematic and descriptive literature study focused on analysis of the main benefits and identification of the use of social networks and digital platforms such as Virtual Learning Environments (VAS) in the area of university education. 52 scientific and review articles from the last 15 years are studied and analyzed from 5 bibliographic databases: Scopus, EBSCO, ScienceDirect, ERIC and Dialnet, which answer 3 research questions. The most significant results reveal the contribution of social networks in the development of cognitive skills, critical thinking in students, communication and interaction between teachers and students.
