Resumen: Underwater wireless sensor networks (UWSNs) are a technology that is gaining ground in the field of research, oriented to generate applications that allow the monitoring of the underwater environment, oil bases, pollution control, and natural disasters. This type of networks, as well as terrestrial wireless sensor networks (TWSN), must apply security to protect the communication and transmission of information between nodes. Therefore, an analysis of the challenges related to cryptographic security that UWSNs must consider for the development of robust, secure, lightweight, and efficient cryptographic algorithms is addressed. A review of primitive cryptographic algorithms adapted to secure communication protocols in underwater environments is conducted, as well as some general and specific considerations for the development of cryptographic algorithms for underwater environments. This review seeks to establish an analysis to improve or propose cryptographic algorithms that meet the established security considerations.
