Resumen: The best way to prevent occupational risks is to eliminate or control them at their source of origin; when this is not possible, it is required to provide workers with protective clothing or personal protection devices. This investigation was aimed at determine the general characteristics that work clothes must meet to mitigate each occupational risk factor. For this, the classification of the risk factors recognized in our legislation was considered, the norms on the design, confection and quality control collected from the national and international context and the factors that directly influence the quality of clothing. Finally it was established that not all risks can be mitigated with work clothes, such as psychosocial risks and others, in addition, there are national and international standards for the design and manufacture of work clothes that need to be expanded and updated to new materials that are being developed and used in the textile industry and that the quality of work clothes depends mainly on four factors: the composition of the yarn that mainly determines almost all the attributes of the textile, the type of fabric, the textile finish and the confection
